Don't "Waffle" Around ... Use Your Own Personal Liahona

Monday night, we had an awesome Family Home Evening!  It was Belle's turn to teach the lesson so Belle and I went straight to work coming up with a plan.  We decided to have a "Dinner Lesson".  What that meant is that we all sat around the dinner table, ate food and discussed our topic.  It was a relaxed Family Home Evening but the discussion went great!  Here was  our "Game Plan" for the night.

First, we had to come up with a "theme" to go along with our lesson.  This year, we have been focusing on the Book of Mormon (which is the course of study in Sunday School).  Each Monday we are working our way through the experiences and stories in the Book of Mormon, as well as learning about the incredible heroes in this truly inspired book.  This week we were still learning about Nephi and his family ... in particular, the Liahona and how it helped Lehi's family in the wilderness.  As Belle I discussed how the Liahona helped give direction and helped Nephi and his family members to know what they should do ... a "theme" popped into our heads.  "We Don't Waffle!"  We can be like Nephi and stand firm ... knowing which direction we should go ... using our own personal Liahona.

Once we decided on this, we knew we had to have a "Waffle Bar" as our dinner that night.  Belle took over and did an amazing job putting the dinner together.  She set the table (with help from her siblings) and wrote on the table runner all the steps in making the perfect waffle.
She placed our night's "theme" at each place setting so everyone could be reminded about our Family Home Evening message.
Belle did an amazing job setting the table perfectly to set the mood for the evening's discussion.
Once everyone was seated and the prayer was said, it was time to see how creative everyone could be.  On another table, Belle set out all the food.  And talk about a very yummy selection!  Everyone was busy putting together the perfect waffle combination.  Of course we had some suggestions for those not knowing what sounded good, but generally everyone came up with delicious concoctions!
As we ate, Belle started the discussion. She asked everyone to think of these three statements:
I don’t want to.
I’ll think about it.
I’ll try.
She asked us if we sometimes use these statements or thoughts when facing a task we have been asked to do?  Does much get done if this is our attitude?  Then she read the following scripture:
"And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father:
I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded,
for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men,
save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish
the thing which he commandeth them."
1 Nephi 3:7

What a difference in attitude!  Nephi had an "I Will" attitude!  Belle challenged us all to be the same way as Nephi.

We then went on discuss how Nephi and his family weren't left alone, without help, in the wilderness.  They were given the Liahona.  We talked about what the Liahona was, how it worked and how it helped Lehi's family.  We also discussed how we are not not left alone to "waffle" around ... not knowing which direction we should be going.  We have personal "Liahonas" that have been given to us to help direct us.  They are our Patriarchal Blessing, the Scriptures, the Words of Latter-Day Prophets, and the Holy Ghost.
What a fun evening family night was!  We had good food.  We had an awesome discussion.  We learnt a valuable lesson that can help us in our lives.  We laughed together.  But most importantly ... we spent time together!  That's what life is all about!
